"One hundred years from now, as people look back on
our use of this continent, we shall not be praised for our
reckless use of its oil, nor the loss of our forests;
we shall be heartily damned for all these things.
But we may take comfort in the knowledge that we
shall certainly be thanked for the national parks."

~Secretary of the Interior Ray Lyman Wilbur, 1931

the savannah (aka tasmaniaveld)

So, draugt is a big deal here. 7 year draught in
Australia, water shortages, even in Tasmania, where it is
cool and supposedly rainier and stuff. But, I'm reading
The Power of One (which is a great book and I'm sad it is
ending soon), and it is set in South Africa. Consequently,
many times while driving around Tassie I'd look up from
reading my book and see the yellow, dried out fields of
low grasses with small clusters of eucalyptus trees or
single dead trees over flat expanses, or slightly rolling
hills, and think I was in the African savannah. Which, I
should note, I have never been to.

Margaret and I had a really good time, and despite some
bumps in the beginning, we were laughing with each other
and playing off of each other's strengths pretty well by
the end. We also enjoyed our backpacker/tour group
(backpacking in the euro sense, not the american sense).
Folks were from all over the world, all sorts of ages, and
only one other American. That was pretty nice. No real
Spanish speakers :( but Portuguese, Italiano, Malaysian,
Japanese, Dutch, German, Swiss German, French, among
others!

We've made it to Canberra now, after arriving in Sydney at
11 pm and driving to Canberra (3 hrs!) last night. We
almost hit a kangaroo---we're lucky it was only one,
because we saw about 20 along the side of the road over
the course of the drive.

And a Merry Christmas to everyone! Christmas is almost done here,
and we had a lovely time spending all afternoon with my
sister's boyfriend Matt and his family in Canberra. His 3
year old daughter Paris, his parents (his dad was teaching
me some baselines blues guitar chords!), his brother and
sister in law and their two kids ages 3 and 8. It is now
Boxing Day, which means everyone goes to the beach! !
