"One hundred years from now, as people look back on
our use of this continent, we shall not be praised for our
reckless use of its oil, nor the loss of our forests;
we shall be heartily damned for all these things.
But we may take comfort in the knowledge that we
shall certainly be thanked for the national parks."

~Secretary of the Interior Ray Lyman Wilbur, 1931

QuickPost - January 7, 2011

Wow. It was a good and busy but not too busy week. The opportunities to be creative, thoughtful, proactive, reactive, and conscientious all existed. There were some times I thought I should be doing more than reading existing emails or reviewing various materials. But I wasn't doing that all the time, either. I wasn't watched or harped over. There was lots of discussion of impending future work (lots!) and lots of talk of opportunity. And I didn't cause any big trouble, yet.

QuickPost-December 31, 2010-January 1, 2011

Accustomed to the solitary hibernation of Koyuk (AK), I settled in to my new apartment (as of 4 hours ago) for New Years Eve. I put on my pajama pants as fireworks crackled outside. At midnight, when the sounds of fireworks increased exponentially in quantity, I found myself leaning over the heater and looking our my very own bedroom window at no less than 7 distinct fireworks displays. I stared for a while, as my eyes glittered and I began to feel pretty good about living in this place that's small for a city but surely big enough for this small-town girl.
